Are businesses actually making money from every order they deliver?
What does Electroyuva think?
India’s online retail market is entering an exciting phase. More consumers are shopping online, smaller cities are contributing to demand, and new business models such as quick commerce and value commerce are expanding the market.
But there is an important question businesses need to ask: Are they making money from this growth?
A company can report higher sales, more orders and millions of new customers, yet continue to lose money. Discounts, advertising, delivery costs, product returns and technology investments can consume a large part of the revenue.
At Electroyuva, we believe that the next phase of online retail will not be decided only by who grows the fastest. It will also be decided by who can build a profitable business while continuing to serve customers well.
Growth creates an opportunity. Profitability makes that opportunity sustainable.
What supports our thinking?
India's online retail market is growing at a strong pace. However, industry reports also point to the financial and operational challenges behind this growth. The market opportunity is getting bigger

What does the evidence mean?
The evidence points to a simple business challenge: online retail companies need to manage the cost of growth. We believe there are five areas that deserve greater attention.

Electroyuva's Perspective – What should businesses do?
We believe online retail companies should move from a growth-first approach to a profitable-growth approach. This does not mean slowing down expansion. It means making better decisions about where, how and at what cost the business should grow.
**Electroyuva identifies five areas where businesses should focus: **
- Understand customer profitability: Segment customers based on purchase frequency, average spending, product preferences, discount sensitivity and repeat behaviour. Identify which customer groups create long-term value.
- Evaluate product and category economics: Measure revenue, gross margin, fulfilment cost, returns and contribution margin at the category and SKU level. Identify products that generate sales but contribute little to profitability.
- Improve pricing and discount strategy: Understand customer willingness to pay, price sensitivity and competitor pricing. Use discounts selectively instead of offering the same incentives to every customer.
- Identify profitable markets for expansion: Evaluate cities and customer segments based on demand, order density, competition, delivery infrastructure and operating costs. Prioritise markets where demand and fulfilment economics can support sustainable growth.
- Build a profitability-led growth dashboard: Bring customer, product, marketing, logistics and financial metrics together. This will help management identify where the business is performing well and where costs are increasing faster than revenue.
These decisions require more than financial reporting. They require a clear understanding of consumer behaviour, market demand, pricing, competition and operational performance. This is where business strategy and market research need to work together.
What is our final point of view?
India's online retail market has a strong growth opportunity. More consumers are shopping online, new categories are gaining traction, and digital platforms are reaching markets that were previously difficult to serve. But the next stage of competition will require a different approach. Businesses cannot depend only on higher GMV, more orders or a larger customer base. They need to understand the cost of acquiring customers, fulfilling orders, managing returns and maintaining repeat purchases.
At Electroyuva, we believe the strongest online retail businesses will be those that understand both sides of the equation: what drives consumer demand and what makes that demand profitable.
Because in the long run, the winner will not simply be the company that sells more. It will be the company that creates more value from every customer, every order and every market it serves.
